Located in Gardone Riviera on the western shore of Lake Garda, the Vittoriale degli Italiani is an expansive complex of buildings, paths, squares, an open-air theatre, gardens, and water features. Construction took place between 1921 and 1938. The site was commissioned by the poet and novelist Gabriele d'Annunzio, who is buried here. He entrusted the project to architect Giancarlo Maroni. The Vittoriale was intended to commemorate d'Annunzio's "inimitable life" as a poet and soldier, as well as the achievements of Italian soldiers in World War I. The term "Vittoriale" often refers specifically to d'Annunzio's residence within the complex, known as the Prioria. Visitors can explore the gardens, the museum, and the Prioria, with different ticket options available for various combinations of these areas.
