The archaeological area of Brixia in Brescia offers a glimpse into the city's ancient past. Originally founded by the Gallic Cenomani tribe in the 7th century BC, Brixia underwent a significant transformation during the Roman Republic. Between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, Roman colonization gradually took hold. This process culminated in Brixia achieving the status of a municipium with Latin rights in 89 BC. Further integration into the Roman world saw its inhabitants granted Roman citizenship in 49 BC, and by 27 BC, Brixia had become a Roman colony. The site preserves remnants from these formative periods, showcasing the evolution from its Gallic origins to its establishment as a Roman settlement.

Introduzione

Brixia fu fondata dai Galli Cenomani nel VII secolo a.C. Successivamente, a cavallo tra III e II secolo a.C., subì un progressivo processo di colonizzazione da parte della Repubblica romana, giungendo nell'89 a.C. a ottenere lo stato di municipium di diritto latino, nel 49 a.C. la cittadinanza romana per i suoi abitanti e, nel 27 a.C., lo stato di colonia romana.
