Padenghe sul Garda is located on a hill in a beautiful panoramic position, in the Valtenesi valley, the land of vineyards and olive groves, at the lakeside of the lower Lake Garda. Valtenesi is composed of a variety of hills descending to the shore of Lake Garda from Padenghe in the south to Salò gulf in the north. The towns of Padenghe soul Garda, Moniga del Garda, San Felice del Benaco, Puegnago del Garda, Polpenazze del Garda and Soiano del Lago make up this wonderful region. It is place of touristic interests thanks to its beaches, the intense blue water of the lake, facilities giving the possibility to practice activities, the beautiful sceneries, views and the friendly locals. The climate is mild with a Mediterranean vegetation which is typical for the southern area of Lake Garda.
Archaeological finds testify that the settlement of Padenghe dates back to the Neolithic period. The village was an important commercial harbour in ancient Roman times. Aristocratic families of the imperial court of Milano have built splendid villas and temples. The Romans made Padenghe its third most important mercantile port on Lake Garda after Peschiera del Garda and Riva del Garda. During the time of the barbaric invasion the settlement has been relocated from the lakeside up to a hill for reasons of defence, there the castle has been built. It was an important strategic outpost up until the Middle Ages.
In the upper section of the town of Padenghe, you can visit the Romanesque San Emiliano church built in the 12th century and the 18th century Villa Barbieri, which is currently the Town Hall and which forms a harmonious complex with the nearby Santa Maria Assunta parish church. The medieval castle, which encloses the houses of the historical centre with its walls, has an impressive main tower which rises above the castle providing a magnificent view to the lake and the hilly landscape of the „Valtenesi“. The Castle was built at the end of the IX century on the ruins of a Roman fort. It is probably the oldest castle in the Valtenesi area.
A small harbour and a nice beach can be found in the village. The landscape is an ideal place for relaxing and well-being with long walks through mule tracks and narrow paths and the tasting of local products. One of the best walks available is from the Castle of Padenghe to the castle of Drugolo. Be transported back to the Middle Ages as you walk through the woods rich in oaks, lindens, maples and hazel trees, vineyards, olive groves, barley and sunflowers fields all emphasizing the beauty of the landscape. Padenghe is also close to night time attractions such as pubs, discos, breweries and clubs.
